Description

Kappa Delta Pi (ΚΔΠ) is a prominent American honor society in education, established on March 8, 1911, at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. This organization aims to recognize and promote excellence in education and foster a community of educators who are committed to professional development and service.

History

Kappa Delta Pi originated from the Illinois Education Club, founded in 1909 by Dr. William Begley. This club, initially affiliated with Pi Kappa Mu, chose to become independent to maintain its coeducational status when a merger with Phi Kappa Delta was proposed. Consequently, the club established Kappa Delta Pi to serve as a national honorary educational fraternity, promoting fellowship and excellence among education students.

The first chapter, Alpha, was officially registered as Kappa Delta Pi in June 1911. Subsequent chapters were established rapidly, with the second chapter at the University of Colorado in 1912, followed by others at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Texas in the subsequent years. The organization transitioned from a fraternity to a society in 1932 and has continued to grow, chartering multiple chapters across the United States and internationally.

Mission and Activities

Kappa Delta Pi aims to recognize outstanding scholarly contributions and achievements in education. The organization provides networking opportunities, professional development resources, and community service initiatives for its members. Members have access to various educational programs, workshops, webinars, and the organization’s publication, The Educational Forum, which has been in circulation since 1936.

The society encourages its chapters to engage in local service projects and professional development events, allowing members to connect with other educators and leaders in the field.

Governance

Kappa Delta Pi operates under an executive council comprised of elected members, who are selected by delegates from its chapters during a biennial national convention. The headquarters of the organization is located in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Membership

As of 2025, Kappa Delta Pi boasts over 20,000 active members and more than 1.2 million initiates since its founding. The society has significantly expanded its reach with over 860 chartered chapters globally, providing vital support and recognition to educators at various stages of their careers.

Laureate Chapter

Kappa Delta Pi also has a Laureate Chapter, which honors individuals who have made significant contributions to education. Notable inductees include prominent educators and social reformers, underscoring the society's commitment to educational excellence.

Kappa Delta Pi continues to uphold its core motto, "Knowledge. Duty. Power," as it serves to inspire and equip educators around the world.
