The shake-up at the CDC has forced Mississippi to halt critical data collection on women’s experiences before, during, and after pregnancy, right as the state declared a public health emergency over rising infant mortality. For nearly 40 years, the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) database has helped researchers and policymakers test interventions, secure funding, and create programs that save lives. Now that the lifeline is cut, Black moms and babies will feel it the most.
