The South Texas Human Rights Center is enthusiastic about raising awareness of Juneteenth and to highlight its significance. Celebrated on June 19th, Juneteenth represents a crucial milestone in American history, as it was the day in 1865 when General Gordon Granger proclaimed the freedom of enslaved people in Texas. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had liberated many individuals in rebel states since January 1, 1863, it took time for this freedom to be enforced in Texas.
