Pittsburgh Sakura Project
From our first planting day in spring 2009, we've had a dream that, in five to ten years, those who love cherry blossoms will be able to enjoy fine, mature, beautiful cherry trees in Pittsburgh. That dream is now a reality!

Pittsburgh Sakura Project
The Pittsburgh Sakura Project (PSP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to beautifying North Park in Pittsburgh by planting and maintaining ornamental cherry trees. The term "sakura" means "cherry blossom" in Japanese, reflecting the project's focus on these iconic trees.
History
The Pittsburgh Sakura Project was formally established in 2007 with a proposal by members of the Japanese Association of Greater Pittsburgh (JAGP). The idea was conceived by Fumio Yasuzawa, a founding member who wanted to give back to the U.S. community by planting Japanese cherry trees. Initially part of JAGP, the PSP became an independent nonprofit organization in 2008. Over time, the board has evolved to include more American members, while maintaining its strong Japanese heritage.
Mission
The mission of the PSP involves the planting and maintenance of approximately 250 ornamental cherry trees at North Park, particularly around Lake Marshall. These trees include various cherry varieties, which bloom in waves of pink and white throughout April, creating a vibrant display. The project is designed in collaboration with landscape architects and the Allegheny County Parks Department.
Collaboration and Funding
The PSP works cooperatively with Allegheny County Parks and landscape designers to achieve its mission. The Parks Department provides essential support by offering heavy equipment for planting and occasional assistance with mulching. Funding for the PSP primarily comes from donations, including memorial tree purchases in remembrance of loved ones. Corporate donations also play a crucial role in sustaining the project's operations.
Volunteer Involvement
Volunteers are indispensable to the PSP's success. The organization relies on community volunteers for planting and maintenance activities, which are organized throughout the year. These volunteer efforts not only contribute to the project's goals but also foster community engagement and celebration around the cherry blossom displays.
Governance
The Pittsburgh Sakura Project operates without an executive director, relying entirely on its volunteer board members. Currently, the board consists of six active members, with a diverse composition including both Japanese and American members. This volunteer-driven structure highlights the commitment of PSP members to their mission.
