Tennessee Performing Arts Center

The Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting excellence in the performing arts and arts education. Located in downtown Nashville, Tennessee, it is part of the James K. Polk Cultural Center and has been a major venue for cultural events since its opening in 1980.

History

The idea for a performing arts center in Nashville was conceived in the early 1970s by community leaders, including Martha Rivers Ingram, who envisioned a facility that would provide cultural opportunities comparable to those found in other major U.S. cities. Despite initial resistance, Ingram's perseverance led to the establishment of a public-private partnership, resulting in the construction of TPAC. The center was built in conjunction with the James K. Polk State Office Building and the Tennessee State Museum. Initially, the Nashville Symphony and Circle Players were its resident artistic companies. Over the years, other companies like the Nashville Opera, Nashville Ballet, and Nashville Repertory Theatre have joined as resident companies.

Performance Venues

TPAC manages four performance venues:

  • Andrew Jackson Hall: The largest venue with a seating capacity of 2,472, hosting large-scale productions.
  • James K. Polk Theater: Offers an intimate setting with a capacity of 1,075 seats, suitable for a variety of performances.
  • Andrew Johnson Theater: The smallest venue, designed for experimental and intimate performances, with up to 256 seats.
  • War Memorial Auditorium: A historic venue with 1,661 seats, located across from the Tennessee State Capitol.

Resident Companies

TPAC serves as the performance home for three professional resident companies:

  • Nashville Ballet
  • Nashville Opera
  • Nashville Repertory Theatre

These companies contribute to the rich cultural landscape of Nashville, producing performances of the highest quality.

Arts Education

TPAC operates one of the largest and most comprehensive arts education programs in the United States. It annually serves over 45,000 students, teachers, and adults through various initiatives, including:

  • Season for Young People
  • Wolf Trap Early Learning Through the Arts
  • Disney Musicals in Schools
  • TPAC InsideOut

These programs aim to introduce students to live performances and extend their knowledge of the arts.

Economic Impact

TPAC contributes significantly to the local economy by hosting over 450 events and performances annually, generating more than $150 million in economic impact for the region. It also supports economic vitality through its role as a major cultural attraction in Nashville.

Mission

TPAC's mission is to champion excellence in the performing arts and arts education, fostering support for its resident companies and community partners. It aims to serve as an inclusive place where diverse audiences can enjoy meaningful experiences that enrich lives and promote economic vitality.
