Louisiana Master Naturalists of Greater New Orleans
Overview
The Louisiana Master Naturalists of Greater New Orleans (LMNGNO) is a nonprofit organization focused on educating and engaging citizens in environmental stewardship and appreciation of Louisiana's natural history. It is part of a broader network of Master Naturalist chapters across Louisiana, promoting environmental education and community involvement.
History
LMNGNO certified its first class of naturalists in the fall of 2012, marking the beginning of its efforts to foster a community of individuals dedicated to understanding and preserving Louisiana's diverse ecosystems. Since its inception, the organization has continued to grow, offering regular certification programs and community projects.
Certification Program
LMNGNO offers a comprehensive Master Naturalist certification program twice a year, during the spring and fall. This program provides participants with in-depth knowledge of Louisiana's natural history, including its flora and fauna, as well as the state's varied physiographic regions. The curriculum includes academic lectures and field workshops taught by experts in ecology, biology, geomorphology, and resource management.
Activities and Events
The organization is involved in various activities such as field trips, workshops, and volunteer projects aimed at enhancing local ecosystems and promoting environmental awareness. Events like the LMNGNO Volunteer Day, which focuses on improving natural sites like the Fort Woods Birding Trail, demonstrate the group's commitment to community engagement and conservation efforts.
Role Within the Community
LMNGNO plays a significant role in fostering a sense of community among its members and with the broader public by promoting environmental education and stewardship. Members are encouraged to participate in volunteer activities and contribute to ongoing educational initiatives.
Connection to the Louisiana Master Naturalists Association
As part of the Louisiana Master Naturalists Association (LMNA), LMNGNO collaborates with other chapters across the state to engage in statewide initiatives, including the annual Rendezvous, which brings together naturalists from all chapters for workshops, field trips, and networking opportunities. These collaborations enhance the organization's impact by sharing best practices and knowledge across different regions of Louisiana.
