South Carolina Archival Association

The South Carolina Archival Association (SCAA) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1999. It serves as a statewide entity dedicated to the management, preservation, and access of South Carolina's historical records.

Mission

The SCAA aims to foster cooperation and exchange information among individuals and institutions involved in archival activities. Its key objectives include promoting the preservation and use of manuscript and archival resources, sharing archival theories and practices, and providing a forum for discussing matters related to the archival profession. Additionally, the association collaborates with organizations in related fields to achieve these goals[1].

Membership and Activities

The SCAA's membership is diverse, comprising individuals from historical societies, museums, colleges, universities, churches, state, county, and municipal governments, ranging from volunteers to professional manuscript curators and archivists[1].

Annual Conference

Each year, the SCAA hosts an annual conference where professionals and scholars in the archival field gather to discuss innovative practices and advancements. The conference includes presentations from a variety of institutions, focusing on themes that encourage efficiency and innovation within the field. For instance, the 2024 conference theme was "Smarter not Harder," emphasizing revised workflows, new models, and the use of artificial intelligence[2].

Awards

The SCAA presents several annual awards to recognize outstanding contributions in the archival field. These awards include the South Carolina Archivist of the Year, Career Achievement Award, Program Innovation Award, Friend of the Archives Award, and the President’s Award, which honors the outgoing president[2].
