Overview

Grand Traverse Industries (GTI) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing comprehensive services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Founded in May 1974, GTI has expanded its scope to serve a broader range of disabilities across seven counties in Northwest Lower Michigan.

Mission and Vision

GTI's mission is to fiercely advocate, strengthen, and advance the dignity and opportunities of people with disabilities through various services and employment opportunities. The organization envisions being the sought-after entity in northern Michigan for enhancing the lives of those with disabilities by helping them achieve their highest level of independence.

Services

GTI offers a variety of services including job training, supported employment, and day programming. These services are supported by two main locations. Additionally, GTI provides interpreter services for hearing-impaired or deaf clients through its LIS’N Program, serving 30 northern Michigan counties.

Vocational Training and Employment

GTI specializes in providing vocational training and employment opportunities that enable individuals with disabilities to engage in meaningful work. This includes tasks such as packaging, shipping, labeling, custodial work, food preparation, food service, packaging and assembly, and liner bag manufacturing. The organization partners with local businesses to provide work enclaves, where clients can earn a paycheck and lead more independent lives.

History and Growth

Initially focused on supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Grand Traverse and Leelanau Counties, GTI has grown significantly over the years. From serving just 10 individuals at its inception, the organization now serves over 500 clients annually. This growth has been supported by its diversified services, including a plastic bag manufacturing business established to train and employ individuals with disabilities.

Leadership and Governance

GTI is governed by a board of directors, which includes notable members such as Ron Lemcool (Chair), Laurie Schnell (Vice Chair), and Cindy Evans, who serves as the Executive Director. The organization emphasizes values of inclusion, integrity, mercy, and empathy in its operations.

Financial Overview

GTI's financial operations are primarily sustained by program services, which account for approximately 91% of its revenue. Donations and other revenue streams also contribute to its financial stability. The organization maintains a solid financial position, with significant assets and a commitment to transparent governance practices.
