Two years ago, the Supreme Court’s Sackett v. EPA ruling severely limited the federal government agency’s ability to protect wetlands under the Clean Water Act – but Illinois could be doing something about it. Despite climate-friendly leadership in the state, Illinois has yet to pass a wetlands protection law. And now, we face a potential new rule from the Trump administration that puts what little we have left at risk. Wetlands are a powerhouse and, in the wake of more and more catastrophic weather events like flooding, are a crucial natural infrastructure that protects not only our environments and communities, but our economy. Wetlands provide Illinois with $750 million worth of residential flood protection annually according to the Union of Concerned Scientists.
