Westlake Thunder Youth Football League

The Westlake Thunder Youth Football League, also known as the Westlake Youth Football League (WYFL), is a nonprofit organization based in the Saratoga Springs and Eagle Mountain area of Utah. Formed in 2008, it initially operated under the name of the Saratoga Springs Spartans until realignment with Westlake High School, which was established in 2009. The league is registered with the State of Utah as a Domestic Non-Profit Corporation and obtained its Federal Tax Exempt Organization status in August 2017.

Purpose and Structure
  • Mission: The league aims to foster a community environment where young athletes can develop their skills in football. It emphasizes values such as teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship, not only preparing players for competitive football but also building character traits beneficial for life.

  • Organization: The WYFL participates in the Utah Youth Football Conference (UYFC), one of the most competitive youth football leagues in Utah. This affiliation allows teams to compete against other strong programs in the region, including schools like Lone Peak, American Fork, Lehi, and Skyridge.

Team Structure and Operations
  • Team Levels: Teams in the WYFL are primarily organized into "A" and "B" divisions. The "A" teams are formed first and are intended to be the most competitive. Additional teams are considered "B" teams unless a fourth team is formed, which would also be an "A" team. Players selected for an "A" team may choose to play for a "B" team if they prefer.

  • Coaching Requirements: Coaches must pass a background check and achieve USA Football Heads Up Level 1 certification. This ensures that all coaches are qualified and committed to the safety and development of the players.

Registration and Costs
  • Registration Fee: The regular registration cost is approximately $400 per player for the standard season, covering essential equipment rentals and game apparel that players can keep after the season. A deposit is required to ensure the return of rented equipment like helmets and shoulder pads.

  • Additional Costs: Players are responsible for purchasing their own mouth guards, athletic supporters, football cleats, and practice gear. Teams may organize additional fundraisers for items not covered by the registration fee, such as team events and awards.

Community Engagement
  • Events and Programs: The league emphasizes community involvement, encouraging family participation and hosting various events throughout the year. Community building is a core aspect of the WYFL, aligning with its mission to create a supportive environment for young athletes.
Legal Status

The Westlake Thunder Youth Football League operates as a registered nonprofit organization with EIN 473461480, which allows it to receive tax-deductible donations and operate under specific tax exemptions.
