Big Sky CARES
Big Sky CARES is a U.S. nonprofit organization focused on animal welfare. The organization operates under the name CATNIP Foundation, which stands for Care, Advocacy, and Treatment of Neglected and Indigent Pets. It is also associated with Big Sky Ranch, a facility that aims to create a harmonious environment for animals and people.
Mission
The mission of Big Sky CARES is to promote and nurture the well-being of people, animals, and the planet. By working in St. Tammany Parish and south Louisiana, the organization strives to reduce unnecessary animal killings in shelters and improve the quality of life for animals and their human companions. This is achieved through collaborations with the public, partner organizations, and municipal agencies to innovate and support efforts towards creating no-kill communities[4][5].
Activities and Partnerships
Big Sky CARES works closely with other animal welfare groups, including Best Friends Animal Society, to enhance lifesaving efforts for dogs and cats in communities nationwide[2]. The organization offers low-cost health services for animals and operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit entity, aiming to keep animals out of shelters by providing various support services such as adoption, fostering, and volunteering opportunities[5].
Founders and Operations
Big Sky CARES is the brainchild of health and wellness enthusiasts Dr. Catherine Wilbert and Sharon Schluter. Dr. Wilbert, a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, brings her expertise in natural health, while Ms. Schluter contributes her experience as a dog trainer. The organization operates from Big Sky Ranch, which serves as a sanctuary for over 200 rescued animals[1].
Governance and Impact
As a partner in the Best Friends Network, Big Sky CARES contributes to a broader network of animal welfare organizations aiming to make the U.S. a no-kill nation by enhancing community awareness and cooperation[2]. Despite its significant community impact, governance practices and leadership assessments have been noted as areas for improvement[3].

Imagine you have lived your entire life with the same family. Your mom takes care of you everyday. You have the same routine everyday. You are comfortable and happy in the home you have always lived in, with the same familiar smells, noises, and people. Now imagine you suddenly develop immense pain, especially when you have to potty. It hurts so bad that you stop eating and begin to shut down from the constant pain. You go to the doctor where they find your bladder is full of large stones. The only option is surgery. You successfully endure surgical removal of the stones and finally get to go back home. But the next thing you know, your mom drops you off a couple days later at a strange place full of weird smells and loud noises. You do not know any of the people there. This is story of Paris. This super sweet girl was surrendered to a municipal shelter at the age of 9 years old. Her arm was still freshly shaved from her IV catheter from surgery. She will need to be on prescription urinary food the rest of her life. Her former mom cited the reason of surrender was that the caretaker of her new baby was supposedly allergic to the cat. It is such a shame that her mom would not try any options to combat the supposed allergies. Changing cats’ food can make a world of a difference. Or have your babysitter take a Zyrtec for goodness sakes. But instead, Paris was left at the shelter. It is extremely difficult to get senior kitties adopted, and her being on prescription food makes it immensely more difficult. She was at risk for being euthanized. We are happy to say that Parish successfully made the trip to Colorado to our trusted transport partners where she will likely get a home within a week. This wonderful girl wants nothing more than to sit in your lap, and we are so happy she has the opportunity to find that happiness. Paris is just one example of the many many cats, from kittens to seniors, that we pull from kill shelters and bad situations. Our transport program is a critical piece to our success. Can you help fund Paris’ trip to Colorado, along with about 40 other lucky kitties?? Venmo @bigskycares (fb)
