Franklin D. Roosevelt, a visitor to our town, once said: "To bring together the records of the past and to house them in buildings where they will be preserved for the use of men and women in the future, a Nation must believe in three things. It must believe in the past. It must believe in the future. It must, above all, believe in the capacity of its own people to learn from the past so that they can gain in judgment in creating their own future." In 2006, PAPHA acquired the most architecturally significant house in Port Aransas. We have spent $45,311 through August 1, 2008 to relocate and reconstruct the house preparing to establish our museum to house the records of our past and preserve them for the future.

Port Aransas Preservation and Historical Association

The Port Aransas Preservation and Historical Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the historical heritage of Port Aransas, Texas. Established to protect and share the rich history of this small fishing town, the association operates under the category of Arts, Culture, and Humanities, specifically focusing on Historical Societies and Related Historical Activities.

Mission and Activities

The mission of the Port Aransas Preservation and Historical Association includes collecting, preserving, and sharing the historical records and artifacts of Port Aransas. This is achieved through various activities such as:

  • Museum Operations: The association manages the Port Aransas Museum, providing educational opportunities and exhibits that highlight the town's history and culture.
  • Farley Boat Works Preservation: The association is involved in preserving the Farley Boat Works, a significant historical site reflecting the maritime history of Port Aransas.
  • Educational Programs: The organization offers lectures and events to educate both locals and visitors about Port Aransas's history. Recent topics have included the history of local shipwrecks and the evolution of fishing and sportfishing techniques.
Financial Overview

The association relies primarily on contributions and fundraising events to support its activities. According to its Form 990 filings, donations from supporters make up a significant portion of its revenue, with additional income coming from rental property and fundraising activities. As of previous fiscal years, the association has reported modest levels of other revenue sources, including investment income and sales of assets.

Governance and Leadership

The organization is led by a board of directors who serve without compensation, except for the Director of Museums, who receives a modest salary. This leadership structure emphasizes the volunteer-driven nature of the association, with most officers and directors contributing their time and expertise without financial remuneration.

Community Engagement

Community involvement is a cornerstone of the association's activities. It encourages membership and volunteerism to promote the preservation and interpretation of Port Aransas's history. Through these community-driven initiatives, the association fosters a sense of shared heritage and responsibility among its members and the broader community.
