💬 New from eLife authors: Reflections on publishing and research challenges Victor Tatarskiy, Alexandra Bruter and Katerina Varlamova recently published their work on the role of CDK8 and CDK19 in male fertility in mice. Their findings show that knocking out both genes suppresses testosterone production and arrests spermatogenesis — the first time this has been demonstrated. They also spoke to us about their experience publishing with eLife’s new model. They appreciated the collaborative and constructive review process and the space it created to focus on improvements that were feasible within their lab’s resources, especially valuable as researchers working with limited funding. Their reflections offer valuable insight into the broader publishing landscape, particularly the barriers faced by researchers in underfunded systems, from APC costs to pressures around journal indexing and impact metrics. 🧫 Not all gut microbes play well with others. People with inflammatory bowel diseases tend to have more self-sufficient microbes—the kind that survive alone, not in teams. This suggests that gut problems might change the microbiome, not be caused by it. (fb)
