Lenexa United Methodist Church

The Lenexa United Methodist Church (LUMC) is a nonprofit organization located in Lenexa, Kansas. It is part of the larger United Methodist Church (UMC), a major Protestant denomination in the United States.

History

Lenexa United Methodist Church was founded in 1869, the same year the town of Lenexa was established. Five women formed the initial class, marking the beginning of the church's history. By the end of the year, church membership had grown to fifty, with services initially held in a schoolhouse one mile south of the town center. The church was formally incorporated as the Lenexa Society of the Methodist-Episcopal Church on May 31, 1870. In the same year, property was secured for a parsonage on the southwest corner of what is now known as 91st Terrace and Caenen Lake Road, where the church still resides today.

Over the years, LUMC has experienced significant growth and development. The first church building was constructed in 1878 at a cost of $1,200. In 1924, construction began on a new church building, which was dedicated on November 15, 1925, and still serves the congregation today.

Growth and Expansion

During the mid-20th century, the church experienced rapid growth under the leadership of Rev. Charles E. Schneeberger, who became the church's first full-time pastor in 1951. During his tenure, membership more than doubled. This growth necessitated several expansions, including the addition of a Church School and Fellowship Hall in 1956, which was later renamed Schneeberger Hall in honor of the late pastor.

In the 1960s and 1980s, further expansions were undertaken to meet the needs of the growing congregation and community. These additions included new offices, classrooms, and facilities such as an atrium and a youth loft. The church has consistently committed to remaining in Old Town Lenexa, reflecting its strong community ties.

Mission and Programs

The mission of Lenexa United Methodist Church aligns with the broader United Methodist Church's goal: to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. The church offers a variety of worship services, educational programs for children and adults, and community service initiatives, such as providing free meals through its "Dinner's On Us" program.

Celebrations and Legacy

In 2019, Lenexa United Methodist Church celebrated its sesquicentennial anniversary, marking 150 years of service and presence in the community. This milestone was celebrated with a theme of "Journeying Together for 150 Years," reflecting the church's enduring commitment to the local area and its people.

Throughout its history, LUMC has been recognized for its vibrant community and dedication to local and global missions, embodying the values of compassion, inclusivity, and service that are central to Methodism.
