The Link
Overview

The Link is a nonprofit organization founded in 1991 by Jim Marshall and Oscar Reed, two former Minnesota Vikings and prominent Black community leaders. Initially known as Professional Sports Linkage, the organization has evolved to address critical social issues affecting youth and young families.

Mission and Vision

The Link's mission involves partnering with youth to help them transition from crisis to safety and healing. This is achieved through a range of programs designed to secure housing, promote job opportunities, and facilitate personal growth. The organization's vision is focused on creating a community where all youth have equitable access to resources and opportunities.

Services and Programs

The Link provides a comprehensive suite of services tailored to meet the needs of youth facing homelessness, sexual exploitation, and involvement in the juvenile justice system. These services include:

  • Street Outreach and Emergency Shelter: Offering immediate support to homeless youth.
  • Housing Programs: Providing stable housing options, including over 250 units each night.
  • Crisis Intervention: Addressing urgent needs through specialized interventions.
  • Supportive Services: Fostering healing, education, and employment opportunities.
Impact and Reach

The Link serves over 2,000 youth and families annually across the Twin Cities metro area. Approximately 85% of its clients identify as Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC). The organization emphasizes youth leadership, empowering young people through co-leadership models and paid advisory positions to shape its programs authentically.

History and Development

Since its inception, The Link has expanded its scope significantly:

  • 1991: Founded as Professional Sports Linkage.
  • 2005: Opened its first housing program.
  • 2011: Began a Rapid Rehousing Program for homeless youth.
  • 2014: Established the Safe Harbor Division for sexually exploited youth.
  • 2016: Initiated a culturally specific housing program for LGBTQ+ youth.
  • 2018: Launched homeless prevention programs in North Minneapolis.

The Link's commitment to equity and social justice is reflected in its advocacy efforts, including policy changes such as the Homeless Youth Act and Safe Harbor Law.

Governance and Leadership

The Link is led by a staff and board that prioritize lived experience and community insight. It collaborates with youth and adult leaders to ensure that its services are responsive to community needs and culturally informed.

Honors and Recognition

The organization has received recognition for its community impact, including recent awards highlighting its contributions to the nonprofit sector.

📚🍎 Happy first day of school. At The Link, we’re grateful to walk alongside youth as they pursue their education goals—whether they’re starting sixth grade, entering senior year, or continuing on to a post-secondary program. We are also honored to support many young parents who are sending their little ones off to school for the first time.
