Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the USA
The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE), commonly referred to as the Elks, is a prominent American fraternal organization and charitable nonprofit founded on February 16, 1868, in New York City. Originally created as a social club by a group of actors, the organization has transformed into a nationwide brotherhood committed to community service, patriotism, and mutual aid. It is recognized for its dedication to charitable activities, including veteran support, youth scholarships, and disaster relief efforts.
History
The BPOE was established by Charles Algernon Sidney Vivian, an English-born actor, and several other entertainers. Initially known as the "Jolly Corks," the group aimed to provide support for its members in need, particularly after the death of a fellow actor who left his family destitute due to a lack of funds for treatment. This tragic event prompted the group to adopt a more structured and purposeful mission. By December of 1868, the name was officially changed to the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, drawing inspiration from the elk, a symbol chosen for its strength and majesty.
The organization rapidly grew, establishing 173 lodges across the United States by 1890. Over the years, it has implemented various community-focused initiatives, particularly during times of national crisis, such as conducting bond drives during World War II and promoting Americanism through various civil defense programs.
Structure and Membership
The Elks currently operate more than 1,900 local lodges and boast a membership of over 750,000 lifetime members. Membership is open to U.S. citizens aged 21 and older who profess a belief in God and are of good character. The organization adheres to four core principles: Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love, and Fidelity.
Historically, the BPOE was an exclusive organization, prohibiting women and minority members until the late 20th century. In 1995, the organization officially began admitting women, marking a significant change in its membership policy.
Philanthropic Activities
The Elks are known for their extensive philanthropic programs, which include:
-
Veterans Services: Supporting veterans through various programs, including funding for homes and rehabilitation services.
-
Youth Programs: Operating youth-focused initiatives, such as the "Hoop Shoot" scholarship contest and other educational opportunities.
-
Community Aid: Providing disaster relief and assistance to local communities in times of need.
Symbols and Traditions
The elk symbolizes the organization’s values and serves as its emblem. The Elks' colors are royal purple and white, reflecting its regal image. Each lodge features an altar decorated with the Holy Bible, and the organization has several rituals and traditions that foster a sense of brotherhood among its members.
A notable tradition within the organization is the "Hour of Recollection," held nightly to honor absent members. The Exalted Ruler leads the meetings, which are often characterized by formal ceremonies similar to those of Masonic lodges.
Conclusion
The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks has played a significant role in American fraternal life and philanthropy since its inception in 1868. Its commitment to charitable work and community service continues to impact countless lives across the nation, evolving while keeping its core principles intact. Today, it stands as an inclusive organization, welcoming a diverse membership dedicated to helping those in need.
