Compassion Works for All Inc. is a U.S. nonprofit organization that focuses on providing healing and hope through the practice of compassion. Its mission is particularly tailored to support the disenfranchised and people within the prison system.

History

The organization has its roots in a vision inspired by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who urged a group of Western students to conduct prison outreach in the United States. This call to action was motivated by theDalai Lama's observation of the profound suffering and inequality within the U.S. prison system. One of these students, Anna Cox, went on to establish Compassion Works for All as a manifestation of this vision.

Programs and Activities

Compassion Works for All operates with the goal of fostering mental and emotional freedom through mindfulness, meditation, and evidence-based practices. It offers ecumenical meditation sessions known as "Dharma Talks" within various carceral systems, including state prisons, federal prisons, and jail systems. Additionally, it provides a 9-week conflict resolution course called Compassionate Communication, which integrates principles of nonviolent communication, ancient wisdom teachings, and contemplative practices. This course is aimed at enhancing effective communication skills, facilitating personal transformation, and reducing stress and violence.

The organization also produces and distributes a bimonthly newsletter that is sent free of charge to individuals in prisons across all fifty states. This outreach is part of its broader commitment to providing psychological grounding and the comfort of human connection.

Governance and Leadership

As of recent data, the organization's board of directors includes individuals such as Matthew Boone, Jim Harper, and Kathy Downs. The board follows rigorous governance practices, including formal orientations for new members, regular assessments of the chief executive, and reviews of conflict-of-interest policies to ensure transparency and ethical leadership.
