Rotary International
Rotary International is a global network of service clubs dedicated to promoting peace and understanding through community service, humanitarian work, and educational programs.
History and Formation
Rotary International was founded on February 23, 1905, by Paul P. Harris, who aimed to develop a network of professionals and community leaders to provide service to others. Since its inception, Rotary has grown into one of the largest service organizations in the world.
Mission
The self-declared mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.
Structure
Rotary International is organized at three main levels: club, district, and international.
- Rotary Clubs: These are the basic units where Rotarians meet weekly to discuss club business and engage in community service. Clubs are chartered by Rotary International and operate with considerable autonomy.
- Districts: Clubs are grouped into over 529 districts worldwide, which facilitate collaboration and coordination among clubs.
- International Level: Rotary International is governed by a Board of Directors that includes the international president and 17 directors. The organization is headquartered in Evanston, Illinois.
Programs and Activities
Rotary International supports a variety of programs focused on community service, vocational service, international service, and youth service. Key initiatives include:
- The Rotary Foundation: A major charity arm of Rotary International, dedicated to global humanitarian projects, scholarships, and peace initiatives.
- Polio Eradication: Rotary is a leading partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, having contributed significantly towards reducing polio cases worldwide.
- Peace and Conflict Resolution: Rotary provides educational programs, such as the Rotary Peace Fellowships, to promote peace and conflict resolution.
Membership and Global Reach
Rotary International comprises over 46,000 Rotary Clubs worldwide, with a membership of approximately 1.4 million individuals. This includes Rotary, Interact, and Rotaract clubs, making it one of the largest networks of volunteers globally.
Rotary International is non-political and non-religious, promoting unity among diverse groups to achieve common humanitarian goals.
