Rough skies. Cold mornings. No excuses. Flying Salukis take 3rd at nationals. It wasn’t sunshine and smooth landings, but SIU Carbondale’s Flying Salukis proved once again they don’t back down from a challenge, finishing third in the nation at the NIFA national championships in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Competing against 30 teams, they earned titles in three individual events, battled through unpredictable weather, and kept SIU’s 16-year streak of top-five finishes alive. Highlights: 🛩️ Grant Gillespie wrapped up his Flying Saluki career tied for 2nd overall, winning the ground trainer event and placing in five total events. 🛩️ Jake Mack landed a win in short field landings and 4th in computer accuracy. 🛩️ Ben Campbell took top honors in aircraft preflight inspection and also placed in traditional navigation with Gillespie. Coach Nathan Lincoln summed it up well: “They supported each other and pushed themselves. That’s what makes a great team.” Most people don’t realize how tough this competition is or how consistent SIU has been for decades. It’s not about flash. It’s about showing up, putting in the hours, and staying steady when the pressure’s on. For those of us a little older now, maybe a little more grounded, there’s still something inspiring about watching a new generation earn their wings the hard way. Congrats, Flying Salukis.
