CULTURAL DATA PROJECT
Nonprofit arts and culture staffing hit a six-year low, with both part-time and full-time positions dropping by an average of two each. Yet organizations are achieving stronger audience engagement: paid attendance grew 13% and free attendance surged 22%. The approach appears to be fewer but more focused programs—organizations reduced programming from 150 to 83 distinct programs on average, suggesting they may be concentrating efforts on growing attendance for a smaller roster of programs.

CULTURAL DATA PROJECT
The financial margins are getting thinner for arts organizations nationwide. With revenue falling 25% and expenses down 23%, the median surplus for organizations was only 1% of total expenses in 2024. More concerning: 44% of organizations ran deficits—higher than any point in the previous five years and well above the 36% who were in deficit before the pandemic.
