Ohio Climbers Coalition
The Ohio Climbers Coalition (OCC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and protecting climbing areas across Ohio. It operates as a grassroots network, influencing local policy issues and advocating for climbing rights. The organization is focused on extending climbing advocacy and stewardship, working closely with both private landowners and public land managers to provide resources on risk management and liability protection[1].
Mission
The OCC's mission is centered around promoting access to climbing areas and protecting nature. It aims to ensure that climbing areas remain open and accessible for future generations without the need for permits, while also maintaining bolted sport routes and top-rope anchors where applicable[2].
Operations
The coalition organizes various events and initiatives, such as trash cleanups, climbing safety classes, and trail construction and maintenance projects. These efforts are designed to foster community engagement and encourage climbers to contribute to the upkeep of areas where they climb[1].
Leadership
The organization is led by a board of directors which includes members such as Courtney Curtner, John Mansperger, Jed Johnson, Tom Fay, Norm Swann, Connie Bogucki, and Lucas Blankenship[2].
Status
The Ohio Climbers Coalition is registered as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, making donations tax deductible to the extent allowed by law[3].
Involvement
The OCC invites climbers and supporters to get involved by becoming members or participating in its events. This engagement helps sustain its mission of preserving Ohio's climbing heritage while promoting environmental stewardship[3].

🎉We are so excited to announce and introduce our new Central Ohio Stewardship Director, Matthew Kolberg! Read on for a little info about Matthew : 🪢 I first got into rock climbing in 2020 during the pandemic, and it quickly became one of the most important parts of my life. In those early days, my friends and I would head out into the woods around Athens, Ohio, setting up tree anchors and top-roping whatever rock faces we could find. Those sessions sparked a deep love for the sport. After graduating from Ohio University in 2023 and moving back to Columbus, I found myself fully immersed in the local climbing scene. I spent as much time as I could at the climbing gyms and made regular trips out to the Mad River Gorge whenever the chance came up. In 2025, I attended my first Ohio Climbers Coalition event, helping build a belay platform at the Gorge. I loved every minute of it. That experience really solidified my passion for climbing advocacy and conservation. The idea that I could give back to the climbing community and help preserve access for future generations is what motivated me to get more involved with OCC. Through advocacy and stewardship, I hope to help preserve and improve climbing access across Central Ohio and continue building a strong, inclusive community around the sport I love. #ohioclimberscoalition #ohioclimbing #climblocal #protectnature #promoteaccess (fb)

🎉The OCC is excited to be hosting an Adopt-a-Crag workday at John Bryan State Park in Yellow Springs on Saturday, June 7th! 📍Volunteers will meet in the Wingo Picnic Area parking lot at 10am before heading out to the work areas. ⛏️This trail day we will focus on improving the cliff bottom climber’s access trail between the Black climbing area and the Yellow climbing area, as well as honeysuckle removal. Volunteers will need close toed shoes; work gloves and safety glasses will be provided by OCC. Volunteers will need to sign a park volunteer agreement before starting work. 📲DM us with any questions- We can’t wait to see you there!! #ohioclimberscoalition #ohioclimbing #climblocal #promoteaccess #protectnature (fb)
