Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic

History of Service Since its genesis in 1948 as an aid to blinded World War II veterans pursuing an education under the GI Bill of Rights, RFB&D has worked to create access to the written word for all people. Today, our mission is to provide educational materials in recorded and computerized formats for anyone unable to read standard print. As the Regional Unit of the Virginias and Carolinas of RFB&D, we belong to the only non-profit organization to provide this service. The people who use our cassette tapes and audio CD's are visually impaired, have perceptual disabilities or other physical disabilities such as mobility limitations that prevent them from holding a book. More than 70 percent of those we serve have been identified as dyslexic or learning disabled. The nearly 7,100 people we serve in Virginias and Carolinas are students, ranging in academic level from kindergarten through graduate school. Our members receive our services at no cost other than a nominal annual membership fee. One of RFB&D's recording studios is located in Charlottesville, Virginia. RFB&D's national library is located in Princeton, New Jersey and contains over 93,000 titles that members may access for their educational pursuits.
