Students in MSS Singers performed several songs during the Village of Irvington’s Memorial Day ceremony, paying tribute to those who have lost their lives in service to the nation. Under the direction of music teacher Megan Hannon, the ensemble performed renditions of “How Do You Tell a Veteran Thank You” and “Ode to Peace.” “Through this experience, the students honored community members who made sacrifices for freedom and peace,” Hannon said. “By sharing their time and talents with the community, they demonstrated gratitude and respect for those who served our country.” In preparation for the event, the students reflected on the significance of Memorial Day by sharing personal connections to veterans and discussing how music can serve as a powerful expression of honor and gratitude. Dows Lane Elementary School second graders demonstrated active engagement and critical thinking during a recent lesson in Katherine Falcon’s class. Using the new Eureka Math² curriculum, the students measured their own heights in inches and collaboratively created a vertical line plot to visually represent the data. Through this process, the second graders practiced key mathematical skills by asking and answering questions based on their line plot. “The students found joy in measuring a peer and recording their information on the class line plot,” Falcon said. Together, the class explored important data analysis questions, such as: Which height occurs most frequently? Which height is least common? How many students are taller than 50 inches? How many students’ heights were measured? How many students are at least 49 inches tall? “Students demonstrated effective communication by accurately plotting their data,” Falcon said. “They showed courage by asking clarifying questions if they needed help.” The lesson served as the culminating activity for Module 5, Ten Tens, providing a meaningful opportunity for students to apply their mathematical understanding in a real-world context.
