Knox Historical Museum Inc
The Knox Historical Museum Inc is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the history and cultural heritage of Knox County and southeastern Kentucky.
History and Purpose
Established in 1987, the museum aims to collect, preserve, and exhibit historical artifacts and documents that reflect the region's rich history. The museum serves as a resource for those interested in local genealogy and historical research.
Features and Exhibits
The museum features various exhibits that include historical rooms dedicated to Native Americans and pioneers, military history, local organizations, communities, and celebrities from the area. Additionally, it offers a photo archive and gallery, as well as a library with audio-visual resources. The museum also operates a genealogy center with significant genealogical collections.
Current Status
As of recent updates, the museum is temporarily closed due to renovations at the Barbourville Municipal Building, where it was housed. Despite this, it continues to provide genealogy services and is actively seeking a new permanent location to house its extensive collections.
Financial Support
The museum relies on donations and sales from its museum store to support its operations. It publishes a magazine called The Knox Countian and offers free admission and guided tours when open.

The mission of the Knox Historical Museum is to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of southeastern Kentucky for future generations through its exhibits, genealogical resources, and community engagement.

PROPOSED FACEBOOK SOLICITATION The Knox Historical Museum is in need of photos and information concerning the Barbourville Brickyard from its inception in 1905 until its closing in 1957. The photos and/or information needed include: 1. People who worked or lived on the premises, including a description of the work and when performed; 2. Specific information related to the following people known to have worked at the Brickyard: S.B. Dishman, J.A. McDermitt, L.L. Richardson, James Richard (Dick) Bacon, Jackie Jones, Roy Henson, Enoch Smith, Bob Partin, and Josh Shupe. (Photos both on or off the Brickyard); 3. The Brick Plant, Pug Mill, Kilns, Yard, Steam/Power/Drag Line Shovel, Side Cars, Any Equipment; 4. Work being performed at the Plant, Yard or Ponds; 5. The Ponds at anytime before the extension of Allison Avenue through the Ponds; and 6. Houses and families who lived on the Brickyard premises. Navigation Help Us Find a Permanent Home. The Museum is looking for a new permanent location. Due to changes related to the renovation of the Barbourville Municipal Building the Museum will not have the required space to operate fully from its prior location within the Municipal Building. We are looking for a new location that will be fully dedicated to housing the Museums considerable physical collections of artifacts and all of its genealogical research materials for the enjoyment and use of future generations.
