Ignacy Steiner (1923–1943) Ignacy Steiner was born on February 3, 1923, in Kraków, Poland, to Chana Baum and Benjamin Steiner. His father, originally from Tarnów, was a shoemaker. Ignacy had six siblings—three brothers and three sisters. From 1921 to 1941, the family lived in a modest home owned by the Association of Craftsmen in Kraków. On the eve of World War II, around 56,000 Jews lived in Kraków—nearly a quarter of the city’s 250,000 residents. By November 1939, that number had grown to approximately 70,000. German statistics from 1940 reported more than 200,000 Jews in the Kraków District, exceeding 5% of the population—though likely an underestimate. The Steiner family fled Kraków and were deported to camps in the Czech Republic and Vienna. Ignacy was murdered, either in the ghetto or a camp. He was just 20 years old and was one of 1.5 million Jewish children murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators during the Holocaust. Today, his memory is honored through The Butterfly Project—a global initiative that uses art, education, and remembrance to teach the lessons of the Holocaust and stand against hatred and bigotry. 🦋 Learn more and take part in this powerful act of remembrance: vaholocaust.org/the-butterfly-project-for-students #NeverForget #TheButterflyProjectNow #HolocaustEducation #VAHolocaustMu (fb)
