Technology Student Association
The Technology Student Association (TSA) is a national non-profit career and technical student organization (CTSO) in the United States. It engages over 300,000 middle and high school students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) activities. TSA's mission is to enhance personal development, leadership, and career opportunities in STEM by integrating these concepts through intracurricular activities, competitions, and related programs.
History
TSA was originally formed as the American Industrial Arts Student Association (AIASA) in the 1950s. It became an independent organization, AIASA Inc., in 1978. The name was changed to the Technology Student Association in 1988 to better reflect its focus on technology. This change marked a shift from industrial arts to mainstream technology, aligning with broader educational trends.
Structure and Membership
TSA has more than 2,300 chapters across the United States, with members participating in various STEM-related activities. The organization is supported by approximately 3,500 teachers and advisors who are typically technology and engineering educators interested in developing college and career-ready students.
Activities and Competitions
TSA offers over 75 competitive events for middle and high school students. These competitions are aligned with national STEM standards and include activities such as architectural design, digital video production, forensic science, software development, and robotics. Events are structured at the local, regional, state, and national levels, providing a tiered system for students to compete against their peers.
Program Initiatives
In addition to its competitions, TSA participates in several programs, including:
- Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science (TEAMS): An annual one-day competition focusing on engineering challenges.
- Solar Sprint: A program allowing students to design solar-powered cars, supported by the U.S. Army Educational Outreach Program.
- Unite: A summer program on college campuses for high school students interested in STEM, also sponsored by the U.S. Army Educational Outreach Program.
Mission and Vision
TSA's mission is to enhance personal development, leadership, and career opportunities in STEM through engaging activities. Its vision is to accelerate student achievement and support teachers in developing STEM skills. The organization's motto is "Learning to lead in a technical world."
National Service Projects
TSA partners with organizations like the American Cancer Society for fundraising and community service. Chapters participating in these projects are recognized for their contributions.
Leadership and Governance
TSA is governed by a national executive board and supports state delegations that organize local events and leadership conferences. The organization also has a strong partnership with teachers and educators to promote STEM education.
Tax Status
TSA is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Its EIN is 42-1202846.
