Before spin class and fixies, bikes were downright scandalous. The 1890s bicycle craze wasn’t just about transportation—it turned heads, challenged corsets, and gave society a serious case of wheel fever. In the 1890s, bicycles weren’t just a fad—they were a full-blown cultural shift. The “bicycle craze” brought new mobility, challenged social norms, and gave rise to some of the earliest traffic laws. For many—especially women—bikes meant freedom, fashion reform (hello, bloomers), and a new kind of independence. On this National Bicycle Day, take a spin through the story of how two wheels helped change the world: https://www.si.edu/stories/19th-century-bicycle-craze Pictured: Print by L. Prang & Co. Published in 1887. In the collection of the Library of Congress. (fb)
