President Johnson signed the historic Voting Rights Act into law #OnThisDay in 1965, which removed discriminatory barriers that kept many people of color from voting. While women were granted the right to vote in 1920, that right did not extend to women of color who were subject to poll taxes, literacy tests, and citizenship restrictions that prevented them from casting their ballot. In 1924, the Indian Citzenship Act was passed, which granted Native Americans citizenship (though there are still laws and policies today that ), while the the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 granted Asian Americans the right to vote.
