The Arthur M Blank Family Foundation
Overview
The Arthur M Blank Family Foundation is a 501(c)3 private independent foundation based in Atlanta, Georgia[2]. Established in 1995 by Arthur M. Blank, co-founder of The Home Depot and owner of the Atlanta Falcons, the foundation aims to promote positive change and enhance communities where the Blank family lives or has roots[1][3].
Mission
The foundation’s mission is to transform lives and communities by uniting people across differences to find common cause. This mission is inspired by Arthur Blank’s mother Molly Blank’s commitment to tikkun olam, the Jewish principle of repairing the world through kindness[4].
Governance and Leadership
Trustees of the foundation include Arthur Blank, his wife Stephanie, and their adult children, Danielle, Dena, and Kenny Blank[1]. The foundation also involves non-family members in its governance, reflecting a blend of family values and community engagement[5].
Focus Areas
Initially, the foundation focused on youth development, culture, arts, education, environmental awareness, and sports. Over time, it has refined its focus areas to include:
- Fostering Opportunity: This includes initiatives such as Better Beginnings (targeting children from birth to five years) and Pathways to Success (increasing access to post-secondary education)[1].
- Enhancing Quality of Life: Initiatives under this area include Inspiring Spaces (supporting greenspaces and park development) and The Art of Change (arts programming)[1].
In recent years, the foundation has committed to addressing pressing societal challenges by focusing on five key areas: Atlanta’s Westside, Democracy, Environment, Mental Health and Well-being, and Youth Development[4].
Impact and Achievements
Since its inception, the Arthur M Blank Family Foundation has granted over $1.3 billion to charitable causes, primarily in Georgia and Montana[4]. The foundation celebrated surpassing $1 billion in giving in recent years and plans to accelerate its philanthropic efforts over the next decade[5].
Operational Model
The foundation operates out of a “family office” in Atlanta, which was designed to minimize environmental impact. The building received gold certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) from the United States Green Building Council, becoming the first such certified building in Georgia[1].
Financials
The foundation's activities and finances are detailed in its annual Form 990-PF filings with the IRS. Contributions and investment revenues make up the bulk of its income, with charitable disbursements exceeding total expenses in some years[2].
Philanthropic Strategy
Arthur Blank has emphasized the importance of engaging in philanthropy during his lifetime and involving his family. At least 95% of his family estate is slated to go to the foundation, reflecting a commitment to philanthropy that spans generations[5]. Future plans include increased involvement from younger family members in grantmaking decisions[5].

🚒 Paradise Valley, Montana, has 3,000 residents year-round, but that number jumps 30% during tourist season. This beautiful, remote area is also one of the most wildfire-prone regions in America, so when their main fire/EMS truck broke down, the entire community was at risk. "All of our water for firefighting must be trucked in," explains EMS Captain Billy Watson. "It's our goal to increase our response capabilities to a level where we can lower the insurance rating for our response area, thus lowering the home and business owners' insurance costs." A $300,000 grant from the Blank Foundation has enabled the department to purchase a new water truck, doubling its water capacity and replacing an older unit that wasn't dependable.
