Veterans of Foreign Wars
The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is a nonprofit veterans service organization in the United States. It is the oldest major combat veterans organization in the country, tracing its roots back to 1899. The VFW was officially named Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States on August 1, 1914[1][2].
History
The VFW was founded by veterans of the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection. Initially, local organizations were formed in several states, including Ohio, Colorado, and Pennsylvania, to secure rights and benefits for veterans. Over time, these groups merged to form a national organization. By 1936, the VFW had grown significantly, with nearly 200,000 members[2][3].
The organizational structure and membership requirements were formally established in 1914. The VFW received its Congressional Charter on May 28, 1936, which recognized it as a government-chartered nonprofit organization[3][5].
Mission and Activities
The VFW's mission is multifaceted, focusing on:
- Fostering Camaraderie: Among U.S. veterans of overseas conflicts.
- Service and Advocacy: Serving veterans, the military, and communities while advocating for veteran rights.
- Education and Welfare: Engaging in educational and charitable activities to support veterans and their families[1][5].
The VFW has played a significant role in several legislative victories, including the establishment of the Veterans Administration, the creation of the GI Bill for the 20th and 21st centuries, and the fight for compensation for Vietnam vets exposed to Agent Orange and veterans with Gulf War Syndrome[2][5]. Additionally, the VFW supported the passage of the 2019 Blue Water Navy Veteran Act and the 2022 Honoring Our PACT Act, which expanded benefits for veterans exposed to toxic substances[5].
Community Engagement
The VFW is known for its extensive community engagement. Members contribute millions of hours in volunteer work annually, participating in events like Make A Difference Day and National Volunteer Week. The organization also provides scholarships to students and supports the construction of various veterans memorials[2][5].
Membership
To become a VFW member, one must have served in the U.S. Armed Forces with an honorable discharge and have service in a foreign war or campaign. The organization has over 1.4 million members and an auxiliary[1][5].
Structure
The VFW operates through more than 8,000 Posts worldwide, offering a variety of programs and services to veterans, service members, and their families[4][5]. The organization is supported by charitable donations and does not receive funding from U.S. tax receipts[3].

- Veterans Assistance: Provides aid with VA claims and benefits.
- Community Programs: Offers scholarships, educational support, and promotes patriotic events.
- Memorials and Tributes: Supports the construction and maintenance of veterans memorials nationwide[2][5].
