Description

South Florida Orchid Society, Inc.

The South Florida Orchid Society, Inc., is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the improvement and conservation of orchids through education and research. It was founded in 1945 in response to the rapidly growing interest in orchids in southern Florida.

Founding and Early Activities

The society was established by a group of orchid enthusiasts, with Alex D. Hawkes serving as its first president, followed by Dr. Walter C. Jones. One of its initial notable endeavors was partnering with the Miami Orchid Circle to host the First Annual South Florida Orchid Show in February 1945. Over the years, the society has organized numerous orchid shows, including 65 Miami International Orchid Shows, and co-sponsored significant events such as the 11th World Orchid Conference in 1984 and the 19th World Orchid Conference in 2009[1].

Mission and Activities

As an affiliate of the American Orchid Society, Inc., the South Florida Orchid Society focuses on educating members and the public about orchid care and conservation. The society participates in research and judging activities, utilizing the West Palm Beach Judging Center. It conducts annual international orchid shows that feature exhibits, lectures, and judging of orchid flowers, along with commercial sales to engage orchid enthusiasts[2][4].

Community Engagement

The society engages with the community through educational events and presentations by experts. For instance, members like Larry Cox share their experiences and knowledge on growing specific orchid genera in South Florida's climate. The society also supports the sale of plants, offering opportunities for members and attendees to acquire orchids suitable for local growing conditions[3].
