Walking Down Ranch Inc
TO ASSIST ALL VETERANS IN ALL ASPECTS OF TRANSITION FROM MILITARY SERVICE BACK TO CIVILIAN LIFE
Walking Down Ranch Inc
Walking Down Ranch Inc. is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting veterans and their families. It is headquartered in Lakeside, Arizona, and operates as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
History
The organization was founded in 2012 by Maggie Heath, Alfred, and Ann Avenenti. Initially, the founders assisted veterans at the Concho Food Bank. In 2014, Walking Down Ranch Inc. received its 501(c)(3) status, which allowed it to formally establish itself as a nonprofit. Initially, it attempted to develop a property in a rural area, but the project did not succeed. In late 2017, the organization received the Old Rainbow Lodge from the East Mesa Fire Fighter Charities. This property included 18 cabins and an old house, which were renovated to serve as transitional housing for veterans.
By October 2021, the organization had successfully transitioned 178 veterans and their families through its program. The Veterans Village mortgage was paid off within just three years and ten months. This achievement underscores the organization's efficiency and community support.
Mission and Services
Walking Down Ranch Inc. provides a comprehensive array of services to veterans, including transitional housing, food, clothing, utilities, and medical transportation. The organization supports the White Mountain veteran community by offering not only immediate necessities but also vocational training. Veterans residing in the Veterans Village are encouraged to participate in maintaining the property and acquiring skills such as landscaping, culinary arts, property maintenance, and retail management. This approach aligns with the organization's philosophy of providing a "hand up" rather than a "handout," empowering veterans with skills that can lead to meaningful employment.
Community and Funding
Walking Down Ranch Inc. benefits from community support and participates in the Arizona Qualified Charitable Organization Tax Credit Program. This program allows Arizona taxpayers to redirect their tax dollars to support local nonprofits, providing a win-win situation where taxpayers receive a tax credit while supporting veterans.
Since its founding, Walking Down Ranch Inc. has assisted over 650 veterans in the White Mountains. The organization relies on donations and volunteer efforts to maintain its services. In addition to financial support, volunteers contribute by offering legal consultation, medical screening, counseling, and other essential services.
Transparency and Evaluation
Walking Down Ranch Inc. has been evaluated by Charity Navigator, receiving a 3/4 star rating. This rating reflects its efficiency and practices in utilizing donations and resources for the intended purposes.
