Overview

The National Wild Turkey Federation Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving wild turkeys and preserving hunting heritage in North America. Founded in 1973, the organization has grown significantly, with over 250,000 members across the United States, Canada, Mexico, and 14 other countries.

Mission

The NWTF's mission is centered on the conservation of the wild turkey and the preservation of the hunting lifestyle. This is achieved through the implementation of science-based conservation practices and the promotion of hunting rights.

History

In the early 1970s, concerns over declining wild turkey populations led to the formation of the NWTF. At its inception, there were approximately 1.3 million wild turkeys in North America. Through concerted conservation efforts, the population has grown to over 7 million birds today. The organization was particularly active in launching initiatives such as "Target 2000," a national wild turkey restocking plan that significantly contributed to the species' recovery.

Conservation Efforts

Habitat Improvement

The NWTF has been instrumental in enhancing and conserving more than 22 million acres of wildlife habitat since its establishment. This involves partnerships with state and federal agencies, as well as corporate and private landowners, to improve habitats beneficial to wild turkeys. The Regional Habitat Programs, which include Operation Appleseed, Operation Oak, and others, provide seeds, seedlings, and equipment to support habitat restoration across North America.

Research and Education

The NWTF supports extensive research on wild turkeys, contributing over $9 million to research projects. It also hosts the Wild Turkey Symposium to facilitate knowledge sharing among leading researchers. Educational programs like JAKES (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship) and Women in the Outdoors aim to promote outdoor skills and wildlife management awareness among various demographics.

Community Engagement

Through its more than 2,350 local chapters, the NWTF organizes community events and projects to promote hunting heritage and conservation practices. Programs such as Wheelin' Sportsmen and Hunting Heritage Super Fund projects further enhance public engagement and support for wildlife conservation.

Financial and Political Impact

The NWTF has leveraged its funding effectively, often securing four times the value of its initial investments through partnerships. This financial efficiency has enabled the organization to play a significant role in shaping conservation policies at both state and federal levels, contributing to landmark legislation like the Farm Bill and Great American Outdoors Act.

The NWTF operates with a strong leadership team that includes co-CEOs and a national board of directors.
