TO RESTORE AND PRESERVE THE PIONEER FARMSTEAD, AS AN OPEN-AIR, 365 DAY/YEAR, SELF GUIDED MUSEUM: AND TO USE THE FARMSTEAD AS AN EDUCATIONAL TOOL TO PROMOTE AND CARRY ON FINNISH IMMIGRANT CULUTRE AND HISTORY THROUGH A FREE-TO-THE PUBLIC ANNUAL FESTIVAL
Friends of the Wirtanen Pioneer Farm
Overview
Friends of the Wirtanen Pioneer Farm is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and restoring the Eli Wirtanen Farmstead, a historic Finnish immigrant homestead in Minnesota. The group was established in response to a potential sale of the property, which would have resulted in the loss of significant cultural and historical heritage.
Mission
The mission of Friends of the Wirtanen Pioneer Farm is multifaceted:
- Restoration and Preservation: To restore and preserve the pioneer farmstead as a historical site.
- Educational Initiatives: To operate the farmstead as an educational tool promoting Finnish immigrant culture and history. This includes providing hands-on educational experiences in an outdoor setting.
- Cultural Promotion: To use existing historical resources to carry on Finnish cultural traditions.
History and Activities
The organization was formed in early 2000 when citizens learned that the St. Louis County Historical Society might sell the farm to a private individual, thereby risking the loss of its cultural significance. In November 2001, the Historical Society transferred the deed to this nonprofit, allowing the Friends group to begin restoration efforts. These efforts have included significant repairs, such as installing a new barn roof and new flooring in the main house, largely through volunteer work and fundraising.
Each year, the organization hosts Family Fall Farm Days in September, featuring traditional food, handcrafted items, and animals. These events serve as both educational opportunities and community gatherings.
Structure and Support
Friends of the Wirtanen Pioneer Farm relies on its members and volunteers for operational support. The organization has over 85 paid members and numerous volunteers from various backgrounds. Funding comes from memberships, donations, and fundraising activities. Despite its community-driven nature, it is noted that the organization did not provide grants in recent reporting years.
Cultural Significance
The Wirtanen Farm is notable for its traditional Finnish log construction, featuring hand-hewn pine logs with dovetailed joints and a restored sauna. It serves as an open-air museum, providing a tangible link to the history and traditions of Finnish immigrants in the United States.
