International Association of Administrative Professionals

The International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) is a non-profit, professional networking and educational organization dedicated to advancing the administrative profession. It was founded in 1942 as the National Secretaries Association and underwent name changes in 1982 to Professional Secretaries International and in 1998 to its current name, reflecting the broadening roles within the administrative support field.

Mission and Purpose

IAAP's core mission is to provide education, certification, and leadership development opportunities to administrative professionals. The organization aims to be the premier network and resource for the administrative profession, ensuring that individuals working in office and administrative roles have opportunities to connect, learn, lead, and excel.

Certification Programs

IAAP administers the Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) exam, which validates the relevant skills and commitment to lifelong learning of administrative professionals. After obtaining the CAP credential, individuals become eligible for IAAP's specialty certificate courses, including Technology Applications (TA), Organizational Management (OM), and Project Management (PM).

History and Initiatives

In 1951, IAAP administered the first Certified Professional Secretary (CPS) exam, marking a significant milestone in professional certification for administrative roles. The organization has also played a pivotal role in establishing Administrative Professionals Week, initially celebrated as Secretary's Day in 1952. This annual recognition is a tribute to the hard work and contributions of administrative support staff worldwide.

Resources and Events

IAAP publishes a magazine titled Office Pro seven times annually for its members and subscribers. The organization hosts various in-person and virtual educational events throughout the year, providing opportunities for networking, skill development, and professional growth.

Foundation

The IAAP Foundation, a separate 501(c)(3) entity, supports innovative research, educational initiatives, and professional development opportunities for office and administrative professionals. This charitable partner of IAAP enhances the organization's mission by fostering growth and recognition within the administrative field.

Chapter Activities

IAAP chapters across the United States, such as the US Fareach Chapter, work to further the organization's goals at a local level, offering members access to regional networking events, training programs, and community engagement opportunities.

Tax Status

IAAP operates as a 501(c)(6) registered non-profit organization, focusing on professional networking and advocacy for administrative professionals.
