🎓 Introducing Shirley Chisholm ’46, our Presidential Medal of Honor awardee! Shirley Chisholm was the first Black woman elected to Congress (1968) and, in 1972, the first to seek a major party's presidential nomination. An alumna of Brooklyn College, Chisholm was a fierce advocate for education, healthcare, and civil rights. Her motto, "Unbought and Unbossed," and her call to "bring in a folding chair" if a seat wasn't offered, continue to inspire. Chisholm’s legacy as a champion for marginalized voices and a symbol of courage and determination lives on. 🎓 Introducing Damien Niesewand ’25, our Class of 2025 Salutatorian! Damien is graduating with a B.A. in psychology and double minors in LGBTQ+ Studies and creative writing. A transfer student from CUNY Kingsborough, they are a familiar face to many as a Women's Center at Brooklyn College volunteer. They've also contributed to student publications like Stuck in the Library and 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘑𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. Beyond campus, Damien is a dedicated childcare provider, a published poet, and a crisis responder for marginalized people. Damien will be returning to Brooklyn College this fall for a master's in mental health counseling, aiming to become a therapist specializing in affirming, trauma-informed care for LGBTQ+ clients.
