Pi Beta Phi Fraternity

Pi Beta Phi Fraternity is a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering women through education and community service. Founded as a secret organization under the name I. C. Sorosis on April 28, 1867, at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois, it is recognized as the first national women's fraternity.

Founding and History

The fraternity was established by 12 courageous women—Clara Brownlee Hutchinson, Libbie Brook Gaddis, Emma Brownlee Kilgore, Margaret Campbell, Rosa Moore, Ada Bruen Grier, Nancy Black Wallace, Jennie Horne Turnbull, Rachel Jane "Jennie" Nicol, Inez Smith Soule, Fannie Thomson, and Fannie Whitenack Libbey—who sought to create a secret society similar to those formed by collegiate men. Initially, the society used the motto "Pi Beta Phi," which eventually became the organization's name.

The first fraternity convention was held in 1868 at the home of Fannie Thomson in Oquawka, Illinois. This was followed by the establishment of the fraternity's second chapter at Iowa Wesleyan University in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, marking Pi Beta Phi as the first national (multi-chapter) women's secret society.

Values and Mission

Pi Beta Phi is guided by core values that include Integrity and Lifelong Commitment. The organization focuses on building meaningful relationships and providing opportunities for leadership development and community involvement. Members are encouraged to develop a sense of belonging and mutual support, which contributes to their personal growth and academic success.

Philanthropy and Leadership

Pi Beta Phi distinguishes itself by being one of the founding members of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC), a historic coalition of women's sororities. It was also a pioneer in organizing national philanthropic projects and establishing an Alumnae Advisory Committee (AAC) for each collegiate chapter. The fraternity continues to inspire women to attain their personal goals while enriching college life with camaraderie and leadership opportunities.

Impact and Membership

Today, Pi Beta Phi boasts a network of more than 200,000 sisters worldwide. The organization has a long history steeped in tradition and values, offering its members a supportive community that extends beyond collegiate years into lifelong friendships. Through its dedication to empowering women, Pi Beta Phi continues to make a significant impact on both local and national levels.
