Seniors and Law Enforcement Together
Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (S.A.L.T.) is a cooperative initiative that brings together senior citizens and law enforcement agencies to address crime and safety issues affecting the elderly. While there are various local S.A.L.T. organizations across the United States, each operates under similar principles and objectives. The program is often associated with TRIAD, a partnership between senior citizen groups, police departments, and sheriff's offices that aims to enhance safety and security for seniors.
Purpose
- Crime Reduction: S.A.L.T. aims to decrease crime and fear of crime among seniors, thereby improving their quality of life.
- Education and Awareness: The organization focuses on increasing senior crime prevention knowledge and awareness about various scams and safety issues.
- Community Involvement: It involves seniors in crime prevention efforts and educational activities, fostering a supportive community.
- Victim Assistance: S.A.L.T. works to improve assistance for senior victims of crime.
Activities
S.A.L.T. councils engage in a range of activities:
- Monthly Programs: Regular sessions addressing topics such as telemarketing scams, identity theft, and personal security.
- Training and Sensitivity: Providing training for law enforcement on handling Alzheimer's patients and other sensitive issues.
- Community Engagement: Participation in Neighborhood Watch programs and other initiatives to enhance safety.
- Publications and Outreach: Distributing brochures on elder abuse and other relevant issues.
Structure
S.A.L.T. councils consist of representatives from local law enforcement agencies, senior organizations, and community members. These councils are designed to be adaptable to local needs and often work under the broader framework of TRIAD, which ensures coordination and sharing of best practices across different regions.
Relationship with TRIAD
TRIAD is a three-way partnership involving AARP, the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), and the National Sheriffs' Association (NSA). It serves as the umbrella organization for S.A.L.T. councils nationwide, facilitating collaboration between seniors and law enforcement to reduce criminal victimization among the elderly.
