Izaak Walton League of America, Inc.
102 years of conservation leadership. Mission: protect the nation's woods, waters and wildlife. Founded in 1922, the Izaak Walton League conserves and restores America's natural resources. For the last 80 years, the Izaak Walton League, a national conservation organization, has been addressing a broad range of issues affecting our nation's wildlife and natural resources. We work to educate decision-makers and the public through our national program staff and through our 50,000 members and supporters that are organized through 300+ community-based, volunteer chapters and state-level divisions. Our goal is to ensure that America's natural resource base is protected, managed and used to assure the quality of life in the long run. We accomplish this by emphasizing the hands-on role that individuals can play in habitat protection and restoration as well as through their local legislatures. Our current national conservation work includes staffed programs on public lands management, wetlands and clean water policy, sustainable agriculture and forestry, energy efficiency, clean air, citizen stream and wetland monitoring and restoration education, responsible outdoor behavior.

Izaak Walton League of America
The Izaak Walton League of America, Inc. is a prominent U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to conservation. Founded in 1922 by 54 fishing enthusiasts and outdoor advocates in Chicago, Illinois, the League is named after the 17th-century British author and angler Izaak Walton, who wrote The Compleat Angler.
History
Initially focused on protecting fishing habitats, the League quickly expanded its mission to encompass the preservation of all natural wildlife and habitats. This shift was driven by concerns about water pollution and the need for effective conservation practices. The organization gained significant support, boasting over 100,000 members by 1924[1].
During the 1920s, the League was instrumental in several landmark conservation efforts. Notably, it championed the creation of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge, the first federally funded fish and wildlife sanctuary, in 1926[2]. The League also conducted a national water pollution survey in 1927, highlighting the widespread pollution issues affecting U.S. waters[2].
Conservation Efforts and Advocacy
Throughout its history, the Izaak Walton League has been a leader in shaping national policies to protect the environment. The organization played a crucial role in the passage of landmark legislation such as the Clean Water Act of 1972[2]. Additionally, the League exposed the long-term effects of pesticides like DDT on wildlife before Rachel Carson's Silent Spring was published[2].
The League continues to advocate for policies that protect U.S. natural resources, including efforts to address soil erosion and promote sustainable agriculture. It supports initiatives like the Conservation Reserve Program and has been involved in the protection of significant wilderness areas, such as the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Minnesota[2][3].
Activities and Programs
Today, the Izaak Walton League operates through over 200 local chapters across the U.S., engaging in various conservation activities. These include stream monitoring programs like Save Our Streams, Salt Watch, and Nitrate Watch, which provide critical data on water quality[2]. The League also focuses on community education and outreach, promoting ethical hunting practices and environmental stewardship among new generations[4].
Vision and Mission
The League's mission is to conserve, restore, and promote the sustainable use and enjoyment of natural resources. Its vision for the future emphasizes the importance of grassroots conservation efforts and policy advocacy to protect America's soil, air, woods, waters, and wildlife[3]. The organization continues to serve as a vital voice in national conservation discussions, amplifying the impact of individual actions through collective efforts[3].
