This Barred Owl was brought to us on April 5th after being found grounded in Georgetown, SC, possibly due to head trauma. X-rays revealed no fractures or major injuries, and there was no eye damage. However, a test indicated the presence of blood parasites, which could have been impacting the owl’s ability to fly. Initially housed with other nestling Barred Owls, the patient was moved to an outdoor enclosure for further observation. Once outside, it was clear the owl struggled to gain altitude, prompting a closer evaluation. After assessing the situation, the team decided to monitor the owl while administering medication for the blood parasites, which was given through its food. By April 19th, after days of treatment and careful monitoring, the team observed a marked improvement in the owl’s flight ability. With confidence in its recovery, the owl was deemed ready to be released back into the wild. This is just one example of the life-saving work made possible through your generosity and the dedicated care provided by our team.
