Boys and Girls Club of Greater Dubuque

The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Dubuque is a nonprofit organization serving the youth in the Dubuque area. It aims to provide a wide range of programs that promote health, social development, education, and cultural enrichment among its members.

History

The organization's history began with the founding of the Dubuque Boys' Club in 1900 by Miss Kate Keith Van Duzee, originally known as the Dubuque Boys' Welfare Association. It was incorporated as the Dubuque Boys' Club in 1915. Over the years, it grew significantly, and by 1945, it had its highest membership of 767. The Club was involved in various activities, including annual banquets and sports teams, like the Dubuque Boys' Club Band. In 1967, a new facility was built after the previous one was demolished due to urban renewal[1].

In 1998, the Dubuque Boys' Club merged with the Dubuque Girls' Club to form the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Dubuque. This merger marked a significant expansion in service delivery, embracing a broader demographic of young people[1].

Mission and Programs

The mission of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Dubuque is to offer programs that help local youth achieve their full potential by providing safe, supportive, and inclusive environments. The club focuses on enhancing the lives of its members through opportunities for physical health, social development, educational advancement, and cultural appreciation[4][5].

Legacy and Impact

The Club continues to be a cornerstone in the community, fostering a legacy of service and sports. In recent years, the organization has undertaken significant infrastructural improvements, such as the renovation of its gymnasium, which included installing a new athletic floor named Meyer Court in honor of a former executive director, Clete Meyer[3]. This project not only enhanced the functionality of the facility but also underscored the organization's commitment to preserving its history while adapting to modern needs.

Alignment with National Goals

As part of the broader Boys & Girls Clubs of America network, the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Dubuque aligns with the national mission of enabling young people to become productive, caring, and responsible citizens. It strives to ensure that members have access to experiences and opportunities that support their growth and development, regardless of their background or circumstances[2].
