The South Asian Bar Association of Washington, D.C. (SABA-DC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the South Asian legal community in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. It was founded in 2001 as the successor to the Indian-American Bar Association of Washington D.C. (IABA-DC).
Mission and Objectives
SABA-DC focuses on advancing the interests and needs of South Asian legal professionals. Its primary goals include supporting the professional development of its members, promoting diversity and inclusion within the legal profession, and addressing legal issues pertinent to the South Asian community.
Leadership and Activities
SABA-DC is led by a board of directors that includes prominent legal professionals from various fields. Some notable members have held roles in government, corporate law, and academia. For instance, Asha Scielzo serves on the board and is deeply involved in health law and policy, while Ravi Kambhampaty has played significant roles in the organization's public interest and mentorship committees.
Community Engagement
Through various initiatives, SABA-DC provides educational resources, networking opportunities, and community outreach programs. These efforts aim to foster a supportive network within the South Asian legal community in Washington, D.C. and contribute to broader legal discussions affecting the community.
Relationship to SABA North America
While SABA-DC operates independently, it is connected to the broader South Asian legal community through its affiliation with the South Asian Bar Association of North America (SABA-NA). SABA-NA shares similar goals of promoting professional growth and advocating for civil rights among South Asian legal professionals across North America.
