Community 1st Credit Union

Community 1st Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative serving members across parts of Iowa and Missouri. With a history spanning over 85 years, it has grown into a significant financial institution, currently serving over 70,000 members and managing assets in excess of $1 billion.

History

Originally founded as Deere Community Federated Credit Union, it underwent a name change to Community 1st Credit Union in 2006 to reflect its expanded community focus and openness to membership from diverse communities. The name change was accompanied by mergers with other local credit unions, such as Jefferson County Community Credit Union in Fairfield and George Washington Credit Union in Washington, Iowa, further expanding its reach and services.

Over the years, Community 1st has continued to grow through mergers, including with HI-TEC Credit Union in 2010 and MHI Credit Union, which led to the establishment of a branch in Mount Pleasant. More recently, it merged with Town & Country Credit Union in December 2024, adding branches in Avoca and Harlan, Iowa.

Membership and Governance

Membership in Community 1st requires a $5 deposit into a Share Savings Account, making each member an owner of the credit union. This ownership model allows members to vote in the election of the credit union's volunteer board of directors.
