Since 2014, Dr. J. Thomas Roland Jr. and colleagues at NYU Langone have led the nation in pediatric auditory brainstem implant (ABI) surgery, performing over 30 procedures in children 12 and under, more than any U.S. center. These implants offer a critical option for children born without a functioning cochlear nerve who can’t benefit from hearing aids or cochlear implants. While outcomes vary, 79% of patients show improvement, ranging from sound awareness to speech understanding. Dr. Roland’s team has found that careful post-surgical programming, sometime using fewer active channels, can improve speech recognition. Ongoing research is focused on refining surgical precision and predicting patient success using advanced imaging.
