Tennessee Higher Education in Prison Initiative (THEI) brings degree-granting college programs into Tennessee prisons. THEI provides access to high-quality, degree-bearing college education inside TN prisons. The Tennessee Higher Education Initiative (THEI) disrupts systems of harm, and creates opportunities for autonomy and success through education, support, and advocacy with and for justice impacted individuals. We have facilitated the work of “getting people free” through the transformative and liberative power of education since 2012, by coordinating Higher Education in Prison (HEP) programs at seven prison sites statewide, by providing pre- and post-release reentry support and wraparound services to HEP students and alumni, and by convening partners and building coalitions of state agencies and institutions committed to building student-centered systems for high quality HEP programs in Tennessee.

🧡 Indigenous Peoples Day is a time to honor the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous communities, and to reckon with the truth of our shared history. At THEI, we recognize that the land we live and work on in Tennessee was home to Indigenous Peoples long before it was known as Tennessee or the United States. Nashville is built on the ancestral lands of the Shawnee, Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Yuchi tribal nations.
