Today we heard from a former adopter whose cat, Mixon, passed away just this week. It is clear from his adopter’s beautiful tribute that they had a special bond. Mixon had FIV, but still lived a full and long life thanks to the love and care he received from his family and from Animal Advocate Vet. We are so grateful to Mixon’s family for the wonderful life they gave him. ———————- I adopted him before I even met him. When I took him home I was in the 1st year of my PhD and the pandemic had just hit. It was May 2020. In those lonely pandemic times, Mixon became my best friend and companion. He was eight and he had FIV, an immune deficiency similar to HIV. After a health scare that led him to the emergency vet in the summer of 2020, we were bonded. He knew I was his person. Since then, Mixon gave me so much joy, companionship, laughs, and comfort in difficult times. He loved his window sills and sunbeams and hated the vet and the vacuum cleaner. He instantly endeared everyone who met him. He was a different kind of cat—friendly, unafraid, but firm with his boundaries. My partner quickly fell in love with him, their personalities like mirrors of one another. I was lucky to have 5 years with this funny, fierce, odds-defying, courageous little man. He had many health issues in the past 5 months and we went to the vet on almost a weekly basis. He was famous for his grumpy demeanor at the vet office. He fought me when I tried to give him medication. But everyday he was defying all the odds — the vet told us that he was the oldest FIV+ cat she had ever met. He may have been in pain, but he didn’t show it. His time came. I knew within minutes of waking up yesterday that something was terribly wrong. He passed away peacefully in my arms at 13(ish, because we never really knew his age). It seems weird to be saying this about a pet, but I really feel like I lost a part of myself. Thank you for getting me through the hardest times, Mixon. Thank you to the staff at Animal Advocate Pet Hospital and Dr. Emily MacLeish for giving him all the care they possibly could.
