Road Runners Club of America
Overview
The Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) is the oldest and largest national association of running organizations in the United States, founded on February 22, 1958. It is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to promoting and growing the sport of running nationwide. As of its founding, RRCA included a few initial member clubs, including the New York Road Runners.
Mission
The mission of the RRCA is to champion the development of community-based running clubs and events that serve runners of all ages and abilities in pursuit of health and competition. The vision is to see organized and active running clubs and events in every community.
Historical Background
- 1958: The RRCA was established during a time when there were only a handful of road races nationwide. It was founded in part due to a perceived lack of support for distance running by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU).
- 1963: RRCA ignored AAU age and medical requirements for racing and did not impose air temperature limits.
- 1964: RRCA started certifying accurately measured courses and awarding certificates for times achieved on these certified courses.
- 1965: Hosted the first National Women’s Cross Country Championship.
- 1970: Hosted the first women’s marathon championship despite AAU prohibitions.
- 1978: The RRCA played a significant role in lobbying for the Amateur Sports Act, leading to the breakup of the AAU’s monopoly over amateur sports.

Governance
RRCA operates with significant input from its member clubs, which elect a 9-member Board of Directors. The organization encourages individuals to join local member running clubs where possible, ensuring all members benefit from RRCA membership.
Impact and Growth
RRCA has been instrumental in promoting women's running and advocating for equal prize structures. It continues to grow with over 1,500 running club and event members and supports thousands of races annually. The RRCA has also launched various initiatives like the Runner Friendly Community Program and the National Running Awards.
