In the '90s and early '00s, notions of white evangelical purity culture exploded into the mainstream with images like daddy-daughter virginity pledges, so-called “purity balls”, promise rings, and the “True Love Waits” campaign. As American evangelism continues its rise amid an ongoing conservative backlash, purity culture has evolved and taken on new forms. The next installment of our public lecture series, coming up on Tuesday, June 10, at 6:30pm CT, will consider the legacy and ongoing impacts of purity culture. “Considering Purity Culture Now: Iterations, Impacts, and Interventions,” delivered by Assistant Professor Rev. Kathryn House, will focus on the past twenty years of scholarship about white evangelical purity culture, outlining what purity campaigns look like today and how progressive theology can both disrupt this ideology and build less harmful alternatives.
