The society was established in 1961 with the primary objective of collecting, preserving, and showcasing local historical artifacts and stories.
Founding and Evolution
The society's efforts led to the establishment of the Dickinson County Museum in 1970. Initially located at the Lakes Art Center, the museum later moved to a former Chicago-Milwaukee railroad depot in 1973. This historic 140-year-old depot serves as the museum's home, offering a unique and educational experience for visitors. The Historical Society purchased the depot in 1975 and has continued to expand its facilities, including the addition of an orange caboose and a brick extension in 1995 to house an expanding collection of artifacts.
Collections and Exhibits
The museum features 9 permanent collections and 3 temporary collections, providing a comprehensive insight into Dickinson County's history. Recent exhibits include the Summer Fun exhibit, focusing on summer sports and activities around the Iowa Great Lakes, the Templar Park exhibit celebrating its 100-year anniversary, and the Flood of 1993 exhibit highlighting local responses to natural disasters. An updated exhibit, Abbie’s Story, explores the life of Abbie Gardner, a survivor of the 1857 Spirit Lake Massacre.
Community Engagement
The society is actively involved in community outreach and education through various programs and events. The Keepers of Thyme initiative, in collaboration with MEGAN & CO. Apothecary, focuses on recording and preserving stories of local women. Additionally, the museum hosts events like Night at the Museum and History LIVE, which bring historical figures to life, offering engaging experiences for both adults and children.
