Sanon is a father of four. For years, he worked hard to give his family some stability in Port-au-Prince, a city ruled by violence and uncertainty. Then the gangs came. In December 2024, his community was overrun. Armed groups set fire to homes—including his own. His family escaped, but they had nothing left. Sanon, once a street vendor, was displaced and traumatized, like so many others. By March, he showed up at the CCH clinic in Jacmel. He wasn’t just grieving—he was sick. Sanon was dizzy, weak, and unable to feel the right side of his body. His blood pressure was dangerously high. He cried as he told our staff: “I have lost everything I had. I’d rather die—because I cannot afford the laboratory test.” Can you imagine? After fleeing for his life, traveling across half of Haiti in search of safety and care—Sanon arrived at our clinic, only to believe he’d be turned away because he had nothing left. But that moment didn’t end in despair. Because of CCH donors, Sanon’s care moved forward. Dr. Frézin listened to his concerns. His treatment was covered. His dignity was restored—by the kindness of people hundreds of miles away, people he may never meet, but who chose to say YES. Sanon was diagnosed with several life threatening conditions, including high blood pressure, diabetes, intestinal parasites, and signs of a stroke. He’s now receiving treatment and visits our Rehab Clinic twice a week to regain movement in his right side. Four year old Brivil shouldn’t have to go to bed hungry. But sometimes he does. There are just too many mouths to feed at home. Brivil hears the word “no” a lot. We are on the ground, every day, providing what our communities need. Because of CCH’s partnership with his school, Brivil has a hot lunch every school day. But we’re providing more than just food. A few months ago, Brivil's teacher noticed that he’s always the first child done eating, and he comes back to ask for more food. When she pulled him aside to chat, she learned that he saves food to bring home. "If not," he says, “I will spend the rest of the day without eating.” Brivil’s teacher dug a little deeper and found out that he is living in a modest house with 18 other people. His mom and brother are joined by their grandparents, uncles, aunts, and nine cousins. They are crowded and stretched to the limit. But at least the mountain community of Lavanneau is safe and free of gangs…for now. Despite the myriad challenges facing Brivil, he still has a keen sense of humor. His teacher loves how he makes everyone laugh. She says he’s also great at collaborating with all of his classmates. He loves coming to school (not just for the food!). His favorite activity is playing with the toy motorcycles and cars in his preschool class. And when they create artwork, his favorite color is blue.
